The picture of an alcoholic is typically one of a dangerously skinny person or a person of average weight with telltale signs of poor health, such as bloodshot eyes. However, alcoholism can lead to extreme weight gain. The number of calories in alcoholic beverages is staggering. Sobering up can help.

Depression can cause both weight loss and weight gain. For people with short bouts of depression, these weight changes are easily remedied. However, people with prolonged depression can become obese if their depression manifests as overeating or compulsive eating. Therapy is the best course of action.

Obesity can run in families, whether it is through genes or through learned habits. Obesity that stems from genetics or family habits is especially hard to overcome.

Bad Self-Image

Like an eating disorder that causes weight loss, obesity can be caused by a poor self-image. When a person looks in the mirror and feels bad about their weight, they may react by eating more. Trying to increase self-image may require therapy, but it can help.

Medical Conditions

Not all obesity has an emotional, genetic or familial cause. Some stem from physical maladies, such as Cushing’s syndrome or hypothyroidism. Both of these conditions are treatable, but must first be diagnosed.

Traumatic Events

Traumatic events can lead to bad emotional habits, such as overeating. In the long-term, it leads to excess weight or obesity. It is best to seek therapy instead of self-medicating with food.

Anxiety manifests in a myriad of ways. Compulsions are just one of the reactions to anxiety that can lead to overeating. Therapeutic or medicinal treatments for anxiety can help the compulsion to overeat.

Inactive Lifestyle

It is a common idea that overweight people just need exercise. While exercise can help, it is not necessarily laziness that brings on obesity. When an inactive lifestyle is coupled with boredom, self-loathing, sadness, regret or any other emotion that leads to eating, it can help obesity along. Treatment for the underlying cause or picking up active habits can help.

A leading cause of obesity in children and young adults is parental neglect. A parent who is comfortable with overeating or comfortable overfeeding his or her children can cause obesity in their child through neglect. As an adult, these habits must be reversed, which will require lifestyle changes.

Some studies show that obesity is more common in certain areas of the world, such as the United States. It is thought that there are several factors that lead to this, such as availability of excess food and stress patterns. The only way to avoid the trend is to identify its causes and make sounder choices than others in the area.

Obesity is a serious condition that can lead to deadly complications. It is not a joke or something to mock. As mentioned above, the reasons for obesity are many and varied. They are also not advisable by looking at a person, so people should always think twice before judging a person on their weight.
