HCG Injections For Weight Loss – Its Pros and Cons

If you are trying to lose weight, you may be interested in taking injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This is a hormone that is naturally found in pregnant women, but it is said to have weight loss benefits for those who are not pregnant and want to lose up to 20 in one month. If you are considering using hCG injections for weight loss, you should first learn the basics, and then talk to a doctor.

Much like many of the diet craze programs, HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) has its fair share of deterrents; but before we get into the pros and cons of this method of weight control, let me explain exactly what HCG injections are, and where the origins of this weight loss procedure came from.

In simple terms, HCG is a hormone that is produced in pregnant women, and the use of HCG for weight loss has been around since the early 1950’s, when by a British Physician discovered it to be an effective treatment for obesity. The theory behind its use combines HCG (as an injection, pills, or drops) and a low calorie diet (500 – 800 calories/day). Proponents of the diet believe that this combination creates rapid weight loss; however, opponents believe that a diet consisting of this recommended low calorie intake would have the same effect without the use of HCG. There are many users of the diet that have claimed as much as 3 pounds of weight loss per day, and yet others that have claimed many medical side effects and little benefit associated with the HCG diet. Now that you know a little about HCG, it’s time to dissect the pros and cons of this controversial diet.

HCG Injections For Weight Loss – Pros

Rapid weight loss is the big draw to HCG. According to many researchers and satisfied consumers, the added effect that HCG has on the low calorie intake is far more than what is achieved from simple dieting with the same low calorie ingestion. It is a quick fix to an issue that many find very difficult to overcome, especially those with thyroid struggles, a slower metabolism, and other hormonal imbalances that limit their ability to lose the weight. For those that have had great success using the HCG diet, there is no denying the exceptional results they have obtained. Many of these people have claimed to have attempted many other weight loss programs including Weight Watches, Atkins diet, exercise routines, and countless others.

How Does It work

This type of hormone reportedly signals the hypothalamus to release fat that is stored in the body. Once released, the fat should go into the bloodstream so the body can nourish itself with it. At that point, you will need to drastically reduce your calorie intake so that the only nourishment for your body is the fat in the bloodstream. If you do not reduce your calorie intake after taking hCG shots, you will not lose weight. You are unlikely to feel hungry or sluggish during the diet because your body will have your fat for nourishment, giving you the energy you need

What Can You Eat?

You will need to follow the diet set forth by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, who created the hCG method of weight loss. The diet consists of 500 calories worth of vegetables, proteins, fruits and a minimal amount of starch. You can only eat specific foods in these food groups, since anything else may slow your weight loss. This is why you must be sure to follow all the rules, including the diet, if you plan to lose weight with hCG injections.

One advantage of this diet is that you do not need to exercise to lose weight. In fact, you should avoid working out too intensely until your body gets used to being able to feel nourished with reduced calories. However, one requirement is that you have to inject yourself with the hormone regularly. You will get the correct dosage from your doctor, and you will need to make sure you have the right tools, such as a needle and possibly numbing cream for the shot. You will likely be instructed to inject the hormones into your hip or abdomen, and you may need help with it from someone else.

HCG Injections For Weight Loss – Cons

There is some stiff opposition and testimonies from others who would prefer the diet not be promoted. Among them are a group that have had some success with the diet, but have said to have put the weight back on. Many others have claimed side effects including headaches, restlessness, tiredness, enlarged breasts (in men), or allergic reaction. Most nutrition specialists would argue that the low calorie intake alone is enough reason not to participate in this diet.

In conclusion, after thorough research, I would recommend that in some extreme circumstances such as a thyroid issue, you may choose to try such a diet; however, for most I think the rebound effect of “crash dieting”, meaning taking extreme measures to weight loss, is not only unhealthy, but unsustainable. If you are interested in pursuing such a diet plan, and wish to do some more research on the topic, be aware that the Internet has a vast amount of unproven information. If a website giving information about HCG, has a link to where you can purchase the diet, it probably does not contain much of an unbiased view; but, websites such as WebMD would provide a much more neutral perspective of such a diet. Generally speaking, there is no denying that eating a healthy diet, combined with an individualized exercise plan is the most effective way to proper long term health.

Though many people have had success with hCG injections, it is possible to have a bad reaction or exhibit side effects. This is why you should talk to your doctor before you try this method of weight loss. It is tempting to lose weight quickly, but you should put your health first and get some peace of mind before you start hCG injections.
