Healthy Weight Loss—10 Rules You Need to Follow

Summer is just about here and weight loss is definitely high on a lot of our agendas. After all, we’d all like to get healthy in order to fully enjoy the season—not to mention look great at the beach. While dieting and weight loss can be done in a really unhealthy and destructive way, opt for the healthy route! Follow these 10 rules for weight loss that lasts and doesn’t ruin your health in the process.

10 Healthy Weight Loss

Ban White Foods

I’m usually not one for “banning” anything, since too much restriction can lead to binging or diet burnout, but sugar and white flour inhibit weight loss like crazy. Both are just empty calories that don’t satisfy or nourish you. “Spend” your calories on nutrient-dense foods like vegetable, fruits and whole grains.

Eat Small, Frequent Meals

Eating more frequently keeps your metabolism running and prevents the uncontrollable cravings that come with restricting too much. Aim for 5-6 small meals throughout the day, keeping the largest ones in the earlier, more active part of your day.

Keep a Weight Loss Diary

Don’t worry – you can call it a weight loss journal or log, if “diary” is too girly for you. Whatever you decide to call it, keep track daily of what you eat (every last bite!), record your workouts and take note your weight. Seeing progress laid out this way is really motivating, plus it can help you see where you could be improving.

Include Both Cardio and Strength Training in Your Workout

Include cardio in your exercise routine to get your heart rate up and burn fat. Running or training on an elliptical machine are both great forms of cardio. Read any elliptical machine review to see just how intense and effective they can be!

Strength training is important too. Building muscle makes you look slimmer and also helps you burn more calories.

Control Portions

It’s sad but true: even if everything you’re eating is completely healthy, you simply won’t lose weight if you’re eating too much of it. A good guideline to follow is to fill most of your plate with vegetables and fruit, then measure out correct portions of protein and grains.

Binge-Proof Your Home!

Bottom line: If you shouldn’t eat it, don’t keep it in the house. You can’t scarf down a tub of ice cream if it’s not in the freezer!

Snack Smart

Eat fresh fruits and veggies when you need a snack. Cut up fruit, carrot sticks and apple slices are all nutritious snacks that won’t add a lot to your calorie load.

Read Labels

Don’t rely on claims like “low-fat” and “boosts metabolism!” when making food choices. Unfortunately, many low-fat options made with synthetic chemicals that our bodies havea hard time processing. They can leave us unsatisfied and just wanting more. They don’t always have fewer calories, either! Lost flavor is often made up with added sugar. Check the ingredients and nutrition info before shelling out the cash.

Fill Up On Water

We often mistake hunger for thirst. Be sure to stay hydrated. When cravings hit, grab aglass of water and see if you’re still hungry in 20 minutes.

Don’t Skip Meals, Especially Breakfast!

We’ve all heard that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” This is true no matter what your health and fitness goals are, but it’s especially important when you’retrying to lose weight.

Don’t just grab any old thing to eat in the morning, though. What you eat is as important as whether you eat. Choose something with complex carbs, plenty of fiber and protein for sustained energy. A few good choices are fruit and yogurt with granola, oatmeal with milk and fruit, or whole grain toast with peanut butter.

Crash diets and unhealthy weight loss methods might offer quick results, but they don’tlast and can actually leave you unhealthier in the end. Aim for healthy weight loss for results that last and leave you feeling great.
