Low Fat Foods To Eat When Dieting

Starting a low-fat diet can be a confusing affair. New dieters may find it difficult to figure out what is safe and healthy to eat because nutritionists and doctors stress that fats are important for a well-balanced diet. As well as providing energy and healthy fatty acids, the human body needs fat to absorb nutrients and lower cholesterol. However, there are two types of fat found in food: unsaturated and saturated. Saturated fats, like those found in fatty meats and full-cream dairy products, should be eaten in moderation as they have been shown to contribute to weight gain and high cholesterol levels. Unsaturated fats, found in some vegetables and lean meats, while sharing a similar calorie value, are much healthier for the body.

Quick snack treats like donuts, cakes, cookies and anything with pastry are high in saturated fats, as well as calories and sugar. Many dieters don’t realize how bad cereals can be. Some fruit and nut cereals can contain as much fat per serving as a bacon sandwich. Crunchy oat cereals, granola and anything containing nuts are typically full of saturated fats, as well as containing high levels of salt and sugar. Swap them for some reduced-fat alternatives, or have a healthy breakfast of bran flakes, wholemeal toast and fruit.

You can still enjoy a nice dessert at the end of the day on a low-fat diet. Steer clear of fatty ice cream and have some frozen yoghurt or sorbet instead. They are much lower in calories and are delicious with a side of healthy, frozen fruit.

Always remember that foods that are promoted as ‘low fat’ aren’t necessarily low in calories; it just means that they are lower in fat than the standard equivalent. They can still have high levels of fat in comparison to other foods and, even worse, the fat may have been substituted with sugar to keep the taste. Always check the nutritional information and food labels to keep up a low fat foods to eat when dieting that is healthy and low in calories.
